Recently, Chinese scientists have developed a new type of high-concentration non-combustible electrolyte, which not only makes the battery have better cycle performance, but also effectively inhibits lithium dendrites. A related article entitled "A highly concentrated phosphate-based electrolyte for high-safety rechargeable lithium batteries" [1] was published in the international journal Chemical Communications.

一举多得,新型不燃电解液可有效抑制锂枝晶
Electrolyte is an important part of lithium-ion battery. It plays the role of transferring Li+ between positive and negative electrodes, and has an important impact on battery cycle life, rate performance, applicable temperature and safety. Non-aqueous electrolytes have a wide electrochemical window and excellent electrochemical performance, and thus have been widely used in lithium ion batteries. However, it has high flammability and volatility, which may cause safety problems such as fire and explosion of the battery. In order to solve this problem, a flame retardant may be added, but the flame retardant may undergo a strong redox reaction on the surface of the negative electrode, affecting battery performance.

In this paper, the researchers used trimethyl phosphate (TMP) as a solvent and lithium bisfluorosulfonimide (LiFSI) as a solute to prepare a completely non-flammable phosphate-based electrolyte. The new electrolyte exhibits good compatibility with graphite at high concentration (5mol/L) and can inhibit graphite stripping caused by TMP co-intercalation; and most TMP solvent molecules and Li+ coordination form special solvation structure to reduce the side reaction with the negative electrode; due to the LiF-rich SEI layer, this electrolyte can effectively suppress the growth of Li dendrites in Li metal cells, which is a multi-purpose.

Compared with the traditional carbonate electrolyte, the new high-concentration electrolyte not only does non-combustible, but also makes the battery have better cycle performance, and it is expected to be used for lithium batteries to improve the safety performance of the battery.
