Huda Research Team Realizes 17-Month Stability of Graphite Anode of Potassium Ion Battery

2019-06-11 来源:亚科官网
Potassium ion battery is a new type of battery with high energy density and low price. It has broad application prospects in electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage. Potassium-ion batteries have strong advantages in large-scale energy storage systems due to their unique advantages, such as abundant potassium resources, uniform distribution, low price, and potassium ion embedding in graphite, and have gradually become a research hotspot in the field of energy storage.
As a negative electrode for commercial lithium-ion batteries, graphite can be directly used as the basis for the industrialization of lithium-ion batteries, thereby reducing the obstacles to the industrialization of potassium-ion batteries. In addition, the lower potassium storage potential of graphite can significantly increase the energy density of the whole battery. And graphite is rich in resources, cheap, and environmentally friendly, which helps to reduce the cost of potassium ion batteries. However, the cathode performance of the graphite anode of the potassium ion battery is poor. Therefore, how to improve the stability of graphite electrodes is a major challenge for potassium ion batteries.
Recently, Professor Lu Bing'an from Hunan University reported that the graphite anode of potassium ion battery can achieve stability for up to 17 months. Using in-situ XRD monitoring techniques and XPS analysis, they found that the formation process and composition of the SEI film on the graphite negative electrode surface were significantly different when using different electrolytes. When a high-concentration salt electrolyte is used, the graphite electrode can form an inorganic SEI film at a higher potential, which greatly improves the cycle stability of the graphite negative electrode - the number of cycles is more than 2,000 cycles, and the operation time is more than 17 months. In addition, the whole battery assembled with graphite as the negative electrode and organic material as the positive electrode combined with the high-concentration salt electrolyte also shows good cycle performance and rate performance, especially the energy efficiency of the whole battery is as high as 86%, which is close to the commercial energy storage battery. At the same time, they also studied the process of potassium ion intercalation into graphite by in-situ XRD technology: graphite→KC48 (stage 4)→KC36 (stage 3)→KC24 (stage 2)→KC8 (stage 1), and the process has good Reversibility, this should also be a reason for the stable storage of potassium by graphite electrodes.
This research provides a new strategy for the long-term cycle stability of potassium-ion batteries, and provides new ideas and references for the development and industrialization of potassium-ion batteries.
